Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team capped off a perfect weekend with a 5-2 win over Dayton on Saturday afternoon in a neutral site match from Milwaukee, Wis.
"These were tough matches against good teams in challenging conditions this weekend," said UND head coach
Tom Boysen. "We have to play matches like this to see where we are as a team and what we can do better. These situations force us to either be tough and resilient or to give in and play the victim. I am extremely proud of how we chose to be tough and resilient this weekend."
UND grabs its third straight win and fourth in the last five matches to improve to 7-2 on the season. Doubles played a big role in deciding the match once again, with the Fighting Hawks grabbing the 1-0 lead with two wins on the No. 2 and 3 courts.
"Doubles was a strength once again," said Boysen. "We won a lot of sets and matches that went down to the wire, and we had to deal with the disappointment of losing some matches in which we were one point away from victory."
After a Dayton win at the top spot,
Alyssa Giupponi and
Andrea Pineda notched a 6-2 victory on the No. 3 position to level the two-person play at 1-1 before
Jule Schulte and
Nore Heinitz clinched the 1-0 lead for the Hawks with a 7-6 triumph on the middle courts.
It was a back-and-forth match, with the top-four courts all going to a third set, with each side grabbing a win. Heinitz moved up to the No. 3 court and rallied back from a 7-5 loss in the opening set to post back-to-back 6-3 scores while
Aziza Aubin also bounced back from a loss in the opening frame to grab a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph from the fourth spot to help UND carry a 3-2 lead into the final two courts.
For the second straight night, it was Giupponi who provided the winning point for the Hawks, as the freshman rolled to a 6-0, 6-4 win on the No. 5 court before
Manon Hallemans cemented the 5-2 victory with a 6-2, 7-5 score at the bottom spot.
"It was also great to see Nore get her total UND number of career wins over 121 to move into second all-time in program history this weekend," said Boysen. "We are excited and confident to start our conference season next weekend."
North Dakota will open Summit League play next weekend against St. Thomas on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. from St. Paul, Minn.
