GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 20 Colorado College struck four times in the third to break a 2-2 tie and defeat No. 16 North Dakota, 6-4, on Friday night from a sold-out Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
UND (13-11-2, 8-6-1 NCHC) kept battling back over the final 20 minutes, cutting the deficit to one with an extra attacker on a pair of occasions, but the Tigers (14-12-1, 8-8-1 NCHC) were always able to get that next goal to notch their fifth straight win over North Dakota dating back to last season.
Dylan James had his best night as a Fighting Hawk, striking for a pair of goals and two assists to give him a career-best four points. The junior notched his fourth multi-goal game of his career and factored into all four goals by the hosts.
Sophomore defenseman
Jake Livanavage also matched his career high with three points on a goal and two helpers while senior forward
Cameron Berg dished out two assists for his sixth multi-point game of the season in just 14 appearances.
Sophomore goaltender
Hobie Hedquist made his second straight start and finished with 19 saves to drop to 3-4-0 on the season.
Despite another strong start by NoDak, it was the visitors who got on the board first on a power play goal from Klavs Veinbergs to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead near the midway point of the opening period. That looked to be the score heading into the intermission, but
Jayden Perron wired home a nice feed from Livanavage to knot the contest at 1-1 with 21 seconds remaining in the first.
UND took hold of the momentum in the middle stanza and grabbed its first lead of the game just over three minutes in when
Ben Strinden forced a turnover in the neutral zone and started an odd man rush that ended with James pounding home a rebound to make it 2-1.
The Hawks surrendered only three shots in the second, but it was CC who struck late in the frame off a rush of its own to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods.
In the third, the two sides combined for six goals over the final 7:25 of regulation to turn the low scoring, defensive affair into a wild one.
Veinbergs scored his second of the game to give CC the lead with another power play tally before the Tigers quickly doubled the advantage when a centering puck deflected off a UND player and into the net to make it 4-2 for the visitors with just over seven minutes to play.
UND pulled one back with the goaltender pulled, as Livanavage's shot somehow found its way into the net to trim the deficit to 4-3, but CC responded right back on a Noah Laba deflection in front to extend the lead right back to two.
With the goaltender pulled again, James notched his second goal and fourth point of the night on a loose puck in the slot to cut the lead back down to one at 5-4, but the Tigers held off the push in the final minute and added a final empty netter to seal the 6-4 victory.
North Dakota will look for the series split on Saturday night at 6:07 p.m. from the Ralph. Fans can catch the contest on Midco Sports, NCHC.tv and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
