ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team defeated Fairfield, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon from Orlando, Fla.
After having to wait a day to play their first match in the Sunshine State, the Fighting Hawks wasted no time getting rolling against the Stags, claiming doubles wins on the top and bottom courts to build a 1-0 lead. The bottom duo of
Alyssa Giupponi and
Andrea Pineda opened it up with a 6-2 win before
Aziza Aubin and
Ethel Li cemented the early lead for the green and white by a 6-3 score on the No. 1 court.
Li notched the first singles win of the afternoon for UND from the third position, grabbing a 6-2, 6-1 triumph before Aubin kept it rolling by a 6-0, 6-2 score at the No. 6 spot to help NoDak build a 3-1 advantage early in singles action.
Nore Heinitz provided the clinch for the Hawks on the No. 4 court, cruising to a 6-0 win in the opening set before finishing the victory off by a 7-5 score for the all-important fourth point.
Jule Schulte stretched the lead to 5-1 at the second position with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph and Giupponi added the final win of the day with a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 victory on the No. 5 court.
North Dakota will jump right back into action on Wednesday afternoon against St. Thomas Aquinas at 2 p.m. from Orlando.
