FARGO, N.D./AZUSA, Calif. – North Dakota competed at the NDSU Spring Classic and wrapped up heptathlon competition at the Bryan Clay Multis on Friday. In total, the Fighting Hawks recorded eight event wins, broke a school record and posted 15 upgrades to the UND top-10 list at the meets.
Jory Vasek was victorious in the 400 meters in Fargo and broke the school record in the process, clocking a time of 47.70. He edged out the record of Jesse Fenstermacher, who set it at 47.82 in Fargo in 2012. Vasek's time currently leads the Summit League.
Just over an hour later, Vasek was also the runner-up in the 200 meters with a time of 21.52, which was good for the No. 4 time in school history.
Jerzie Finstad captured the women's 400-meter title and improved her No. 4 time on the UND top-10 list with a PR of 54.58.
Marta Marksa was impressive throughout the day and captured both of the crowns in the hurdles while also posting a runner-up finish in the long jump. She ran the No. 2 time in school history in the 100-meter hurdles and was victorious in a time of 13.86. Then, she won the 400-meter hurdles title with a time of 60.67. Earlier in the afternoon, Marksa had a runner-up finish in the long jump and recorded the No. 5 leap in school history with a mark of 19-2 (5.84m).
One of the most outstanding team performances of the meet came in the triple jump, where the Hawks went 1-2-3 and rearranged the UND top-10 list.
Shane Zierden won the event with a leap of 46-10 3/4 (14.29m) and improved his No. 4 jump on the UND top-10 list.
Trenton Hanseder was the runner-up with a jump of 46-4 1/2 (14.13m) and moved up to No. 5 in school history.
Sawyer Nelson completed the sweep for the Fighting Hawks and took third with a mark of 45-8 1/2 (13.93m), which now sits No. 7 on the UND top-10 list.
Earlier in the afternoon, Zierden also recorded the No. 7 long jump mark on the UND top-10 list with a leap of 23-3 1/2 (7.10m).
Kenna Curry won the hammer throw with a toss of 209-3 (63.79m).
Eric Weiss and
Niko Angell also earned titles at the meet in their respective events. Weiss was victorious in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:38.96, while
Niko Angell won the 5,000 meters in 15:19.81.
Ethan Thomas also added his name twice to the UND top-10 list at the meet. He opened the day by recording the No. 10 hammer throw mark in school history with a toss of 173-10 (53.00m). Less than two hours later, he also added his name to the record list with the No. 8 throw in school history in the javelin with a distance of 193-5 (58.96m).
A pair of Hawks also climbed the UND top-10 list in the 100 meters.
Alimath Salou posted the No. 4 time in school history (12.11), while
Porsha Miles tied the No. 9 time on the UND top-10 list (12.18).
At the Bryan Clay Multis,
Malene Kollberg had the most impressive performance of the North Dakota heptathletes and recorded the No. 2 point total in school history (5,434 points) while placing eighth in her section. Kollberg began the day strong, recording the No. 2 leap in school history with a PR of 19-8 1/4 (6.00m) in the long jump. With that leap, Kollberg took fifth in her section for her first 850 points of the afternoon. She then added 608 points to her total and had the sixth-best javelin throw of the section with a mark of 121-0 (36.90m). She picked up her final 752 points of the heptathlon in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.34. In total, Kollberg posted three PRs over the seven heptathlon events, with two of them being upgrades on the UND top-10 list.
Tiffanie Magnusson placed eighth in group B with 5,016 points. She earned her first 804 points of the afternoon in the long jump, where she had the third-best leap of the group with a mark of 19-2 1/2 (5.85m). Magnusson then picked up an additional 398 points in the javelin with a toss of 84-9 (25.84m). She ended the day on a high note, recording the fourth-fastest time of her section in the 800 meters with a personal best of 2:20.74. Magnusson had a pair of PRs over the seven heptathlon events.
Eucabeth Kivikangas finished 12th in group B with 4,725 points. She opened the day with a personal-best leap of 18-1 1/2 (5.52m) in the long jump for her opening 706 points of the afternoon. Then, she added 449 points to her total in the javelin with a toss of 93-7 (28.53m). Kivikangas concluded the evening in the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.87 for her final 695 points.
Justina Esangbedo earned points in three of the heptathlon events and posted the fifth-best throw of her group in the javelin with a mark of 110-4 (33.65m) for 546 points on Friday. She finished 16th with 2,186 points.
North Dakota will visit California next week for the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 16-18), Cal State LA Twilight Open (April 16-17), Pacific Coast Invitational (April 17) and Beach Invitational (April 18-19).
