GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota suffered losses in both ends of Friday's doubleheader against South Dakota State from Albrecht Field. The Hawks dropped the series opener 13-4 in five innings and was edged 3-1 in game two. UND falls to 25-27 overall with a 7-10 mark in Summit League play. The Jackrabbits move to 27-24 with a 12-5 mark in league action.
In the opener, SDSU plated eight runs on four hits and left the bases loaded in the first inning as the Hawks used three arms in the frame. UND responded to cut the early deficit in half in the second inning as
Alaina Foreman recorded an RBI single to open scoring for UND, while
Taya Hopfauf was hit-by-pitch to plate a run and
Camryn Lasota singled in two more as the SDSU lead was trimmed down to four through two frames.
Katelyn Strauss tossed 4.0 innings and held SDSU off the board for much of her relief effort before exiting in a fifth inning that saw the visitors plate five more runs to lead 13-4.
In game two, the Hawks took the lead in the second as a rundown that eventually erased
Katelyn Neumayer, allowed
Callie Honig to score for a 1-0 UND advantage. SDSU answered in the fourth to tie the contest, took the lead in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth.
The Hawks and the Jackrabbits conclude the series and the regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday from Albrecht Field. Following the action, North Dakota will honor eight Fighting Hawk senior student-athletes for their contributions to the program and University.
