WATERLOO, Iowa – North Dakota women's tennis bounced back from a three-match losing streak to take down Northern Iowa in dominant fashion, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon inside Black Hawk Tennis Center.
UND took control early with a clean sweep in doubles play to clinch the 1-0 lead. The duo of
Ethel Li and
Jule Schulte rallied for a 6-4 victory from the top court as
Alva Norberg and
Andrea Pineda followed suit with a 6-4 win of their own from the middle position. A clean sweep was secured off the No. 3 court when
Emma Roberts and
Alyssa Giupponi teamed up to claim a convincing 6-3 win.
North Dakota would suffer just one tightly-contested loss in singles play as the bottom five courts put on strong individual performances.
Schulte dominated from the No. 2 court in all-out and controlling 6-0, 6-1 performance while Norberg collected a clutch 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 3 spot. Giupponi turned up the heat for the visitors and pulled off a gritty 7-5 first set at the fourth position before cruising her way to a 6-1 second set.
Courts 5 and 6 then saw hard-fought back-and-forth battles that each ended in favor of the Fighting Hawks.
Simone Cameron battled out a relentless and key 7-5, 7-6 victory from the No. 5 spot as Roberts but on an absolute show from the No. 6 spot. She went up 6-4 in the first set before faltering 3-6 in the second set. Now facing a super tiebreaker, Roberts rallied for a clean 10-7 win to walk away victorious and take the 6-1 team win.
The North Dakota women's tennis will head out for Utah next weekend for another road series against Utah Tech on Saturday, February 14 and Idaho State on Sunday, February 15.
