ST. GEORGE, Utah – Despite an early 1-0 lead off of strong doubles play, the North Dakota women's tennis team dropped its first match of the weekend to Utah Tech, 4-3, in Saturday afternoon competition.
UND struck for the opening point in convincing duos action as the tandem of
Alva Norberg and
Andrea Pineda teamed up for a strong 6-2 win from the middle position. The coveted first point was clinched off a dominant 6-0 win from
Alyssa Giupponi and
Emma Roberts at the No. 3 court, putting the Fighting Hawks ahead 1-0.
Then the home team came flying back. A quick 6-0, 6-1 win from the Trailblazers tied up competition and was soon followed by a 6-0, 6-4 win at the top spot and a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 5 court. Now ahead 3-1, a 7-6, 6-1 win from the No. 3 position secured the team win for Utah Tech.
North Dakota still collected two wins in singles play off the No. 2 and No. 6 courts.
Jule Schulte grabbed a gritty 3-6, 7-5, (10-5) win as Roberts fought to a 5-7, 6-4, (10-8) victory, respectively, to finalize the 4-3 score.
Action continues for the women early Sunday afternoon as the Fighting Hawks take on Idaho State at 11 a.m. in a neutral site match.
