THIBODAUX, Okla. – North Dakota women's tennis rallied back from an early deficit to clinch a battled, hard-fought 4-3 victory over Nicholls State on Tuesday afternoon in Louisiana.
It all began with doubles play that saw
Ethel Li and
Jule Schulte taking a strong 6-4 victory from the top court. But the Colonels collected a 6-3 win from the bottom court to knot up tally in pairs play. Soon, the home team was walking away with a 7-6 (8-6) win from the middle spot to take the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.
North Dakota, though, flipped the switch in one-on-one competition to rally back. Li put on a cinematic-like performance from the No. 1 court in her 7-5 first set win, but soon faltered in the second set, 4-6. Now facing a winner-takes-all third set, Li cruised her way to victory with her 6-3 showing.
Schulte joined her in individual victory after making quick work from the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 6-3 controlling win.
Alva Norberg fought back from a dropped first set, 6-7 (6), to absolutely dominate in the next two sets at 6-2 and 6-1 and walk away with her own singles win.
The final point for the Fighting Hawks came from the bottom position, where
Simone Cameron took the first set in close fashion at 6-4 before shutting out the competition in the second set, 6-0.
Four of six singles matches ended in favor of North Dakota, with its two losses coming from the third and fifth courts.
Andrea Pineda dropped 3-6, 0-6 and
Alyssa Giupponi medically retired in the third set.
Spring break action resumes for North Dakota women's tennis on Thursday, March 12 as the Fighting Hawks take on New Orleans at 11 a.m.
