FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota track and field kicked off the opening day of competition at the NDSU Spring Classic with action in the men's and women's hammer throw—highlighted by a standout performance from
Cailey Moton—on Saturday afternoon.
After being delayed a day in favor of better weather conditions, UND's throwers stepped into the spotlight for the lone event of the afternoon. Seven Fighting Hawks competed in the women's portion of the event and dominated as five athletes qualified for the event finals.
Moton exploded on her second throw of the day for a mark of 188-11 (57.59m) to finish as runner-up behind only former UND athlete Kenny Curry. Her headlining throw will go down as a new personal best for the sophomore that also now sits sixth in UND history and is second-best in the Summit League so far this season.
Joining her in the finals was
Julia Matthews, who took third place with a throw of 184-5 (56.23m).
Kaylynn Red Tomahawk was next for North Dakota with her seventh-place showing alongside a mark of 176-9 (53.57m) as
Katelyn Vesledahl marked a 166-10 (50.86m) for eighth.
Haidyn Skeen rounded out the scoring Hawks with her throw of 161-6 (49.23m) for a new PR and ninth place.
The UND men also found their own fair share of success in the men's portion of the event, led by
Carter Byron's sixth-place finish. He achieved his placing off a throw of 175-9 (53.58m) while
Boaz Raderschadt joined him in the finals with a mark of 168-6 (51.36m) for eighth place.
Competition will resume on Sunday at the NDSU Spring Classic with field events set for an 11:30 a.m. start time with running events kicking off at 1:30 p.m.
