GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Three goals within the first 15 minutes of play on Sunday afternoon helped push North Dakota soccer to a strong 4-1 win over Prairie View A&M as the Fighting Hawks celebrated Senior Day at Bronson Field.
Following the dominating victory, five important pillars of the UND soccer program were honored as
Brynn Belcher,
Avery Toms,
Cora Ellermann,
Carly Brimhall and
Annie Stook all celebrated Senior Day.
But before the celebrations could take place, North Dakota went to work on the field. It didn't take long for the home team to jump into the driver's seat as the first goal was scored within the first 50 seconds of the game. Ellermann drilled in an unassisted shot at the 00:50 mark to crack things wide open for a 1-0 UND advantage…and that was just the start.
Hannah Peters soon followed suit at the 2:55 mark off a corner kick with assists from
Charlie Basinet and Ellermann to make it a 2-0 lead for North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks continued to press and stifle on both ends of the field and did so with another netted shot. This time, it was
Hunter Borgel who scored for the home team at the 14:24 mark courtesy of assists from
Viktoria Filsner and Basinet. The now 3-0 UND lead held until 33:09 when Prairie View found the back of the net and made it a 3-1 game on the scoreboard.
That result remained until halftime and continued even through a near-majority of the second half. But
Payton McKnight was ready to make a career-first. Following an assist from Basinet, McKnight scored her first career goal at 76:16 to push the Fighting Hawks ahead for a 4-1 advantage that would stay until the final horn.
Four different Fighting Hawks scored a goal in the afternoon affair as three different Fighting Hawks combined for the team's total five assists. Basinet led with one goal and three assists—a mark that ties a North Dakota school record for most assists in a single game. Ellermann's goal within the first 50 seconds of game time is also now the second-fastest goal to start a game in UND history. As for goalkeeper duties,
Thale Ruether held things down with her 90 minutes of play as she tallied three saves while allowing just one goal.
A two-game stretch on the road is up next for North Dakota soccer as the Fighting Hawks head to California to face UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside next weekend.
