Damian Macias

Damian Macias will begin his fourth season on the University of North Dakota soccer staff and his second as the associate head coach in 2020. As Chris Logan's right hand man, Macias has been instrumental in maintaining the Fighting Hawks as one of the top offenses in The Summit League.

In his first season as a full-time member of the staff, UND posted its best record as a Division I member and qualified for its postseason tournament as an NCAA Tournament eligible program. The Fighting Hawks finished the year 10-8-1 and 4-4 in League play to reach the Summit League Semifinals and record the program's first 10-win since 2006. North Dakota finished second in The League in scoring with 33 goals, one year after leading The Summit League with 41.

That volatility on offense resulted in UND scoring 30-or-more goals in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2004 and 2005. Defensively, UND has posted 15 shutouts over the last two seasons as well. With Macias on staff, Catherine Klein also set North Dakota's shutout record as the senior notched her 14th clean sheet on Oct. 13, 2019 at Western Illinois.

On Jan. 24, 2019, Logan announced that Macias had been elevated to associate head coach after the conclusion of his second season as a volunteer assistant coach.

"Damian has been dedicated to this program these past two seasons and his commitment has directly contributed to two consecutive record-breaking years," said Logan. "He possesses a great tactical nous, is a fantastic technical coach, has great energy, and is well respected by our team so this was a no-brainer as a hire. Damian has coached soccer for over 20 years and this myriad of experiences in multiple countries gives him great versatility in how he teaches the game. We are delighted to have him on board as our associate head coach."

Serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the previous two seasons, Macias has helped the North Dakota soccer program reach new heights with back-to-back seasons of record success. In 2018, UND won a then-Division I program high nine contests for its most wins in a season since 2006 and just missed an appearance in the four-team Summit League Championships.

While at UND, Macias also saw Katie Moller become the program's leading goal scorer in the Division I era (2008-present), named the 2018 Summit League Offensive Player of the Year, and become the first non-hockey student-athlete to be named a Senior CLASS All-American. He also guided Catherine Klein to the 2017 Big Sky Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and senior goalkeeper Olivia Swenson to a Google Cloud Academic All-American First Team honor after her record-breaking campaign.

Macias has brought global coaching experience to Grand Forks after spending time coaching in Japan, Germany, and Texas prior to his arrival at UND to accumulate over 20 years over coach experience at multiple levels.

Macias earned his undergraduate degree in criminal justice from the University of Texas San Antonio before completing his Masters of Science in sports management at Liberty University in 2014. Most recently, he earned a second Masters of Science degree in 2017 from Ohio University in recreation and sports sciences with an emphasis on soccer coaching.
