Collegiate and professional tennis coaching veteran
Tom Boysen was named head men's and women's tennis coach at the University of North Dakota on July 13, 2021. The 2025-26 season is his fifth year as the head coach.
As has become the norm under Boysen, both the men's and women's teams once again reached the postseason for the fourth straight season in 2024-25.
It was a record-breaking year for the UND men in 2024-25, with the team setting a program record with 18 wins and finishing second in the Summit League regular season standings. The Fighting Hawks rattled off 14 straight wins, also a program record, and advanced to the Summit League Championship match against Denver for the first time in the program's Division I era.
Four players captured all-conference honors, headlined by Leo Galliano being named Summit League Newcomer of the Year. Leandro Zgraggen and Andrew Hayduke II were also named to the all-conference team while Ange-Kevin Koua ended his strong career on the Summit League Honorable Mention team.
On the women's side, UND once again reached double digits in wins and finished with a 14-8 record to advance to the Summit League Championship Semifinals. Newcomer Andrea Pineda earned Summit League Honorable Mention honors while standout Nore Heinitz exited the program as the all-time career wins leader with 134 and was named the Summit League Scholar of the Championships for her work in the classroom.
It was another strong campaign for Boysen in 2023-24, as both the men's and women's programs advanced to the postseason for the third straight year.
The women's team once again eclipsed double digits in wins, finishing with a 10-13 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Summit League play to finish third in the conference standings. Individually, Nore Heinitz was named to the All-Summit League Team for the second straight year after finishing with the best conference record at her position among all Summit League competitors. Sapir Sela earned honorable mention honors by the conference while Andrea Jansson exited as the program's all-time leader in career wins with 133.
The Fighting Hawk men also reached the postseason after posting a 7-16 overall record and 3-2 mark in league play, marking the first time in the program's Division I history of making four straight tournament appearances. Ange-Kevin Koua and Ethan Terry earned All-Summit League Honorable Mention accolades while Victor Moreno Lozano and Jerall Yasin earned all-academic selections.
Boysen once again took both the men's and women's programs to record-setting seasons in his second year as the bench boss for the Fighting Hawks, guiding both programs to the postseason.
On the men's side, the 2022-23 Fighting Hawks shattered program records on their way to the Summit League Championships for the third straight year. The team finished with a 15-8 overall record, the most wins by a UND men's tennis team in program history, while also capturing a pair of conference victories. UND started the season with the longest winning streak in program history, rattling off 10 straight victories to begin the campaign.
Individually, Boysen helped Gerhard Sullwald break program records at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots, finishing with a combined 32 victories across play which are the most by an individual player in program history to earn All-Summit League honors. Overall, the team saw five players finish with at least 10 singles wins for the first time since moving to Division I.
The NoDak women's side in 2022-23 also captured a few firsts for its program, finishing with double-digit wins once again at 11-13 and sitting tied for second in the Summit League standings with a 5-2 record. UND started conference play with five straight wins, becoming the first team in program history to accomplish the feat while also ending the regular season as the only program to win a point off of nationally-ranked Denver in league action.
Boysen and the UND women made its loudest noise in the postseason, taking down Kansas City by a 4-1 score in the Summit League Semifinals to advance to the title match for the first time since moving to Division I. Andrea Jansson and Nore Heinitz each also earned All-Summit League honors, with Jansson becoming the first player to earn multiple all-conference selections in the program's Division I history.
In his first season, Boysen helped North Dakota reach new heights at the Division I level, guiding the men's program to its second postseason appearance in the program's DI era with a 12-9 record and 3-2 mark in Summit League play. Those 12 wins were the most by the men's team in the DI era, highlighted by major road victories over Marquette, Oral Roberts, Air Force and Illinois State.
On the women's side, Boysen saw his team eclipse double-digit wins with 11 and a 4-3 record in conference action, just falling short of the Summit League Championships. It was the third straight winning season in the league for the Fighting Hawks, the most since the program moved to Division I.
Most recently at the University of Nebraska as an assistant with the Husker men's program, Boysen brings more than a decade of NCAA Division I coaching experience to Grand Forks in addition to three years traveling the world as a coach and manager.
In the collegiate setting, Boysen has coached at Vanderbilt, Dartmouth and Nebraska. In 2016, while at Dartmouth, he was named ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year when the Big Green finished runner-up in the Ivy League. Furthermore, in all five of his years with the Commodores, Vanderbilt finished the season in the national rankings while competing in the NCAA tournament on three occasions. In singles play at Vanderbilt, Boysen helped two student-athletes advance to the NCAA tournament four times.
Prior to his time coaching at the college level, Boysen spent three seasons as a traveling coach and manager working with a quartet of professionals, one of which – Scott Lipsky - won the 2011 French Open Mixed Doubles Championship. In 2007, Lipsky and Martin reached the round of 16 in doubles at Wimbledon, the semis at Newport and the finals at the Countrywide Classis in Los Angeles. Boysen also mentored Todd Widom, who was ranked as high as No. 200 in the ATP standings and competed in three U.S. Open qualifying draws, and Andrews Pedroso at the professional level.
Boysen coached prep-level tennis at the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville for four years, leading the team to Tennessee State Championships in his first two seasons, 2011 and 2012.
Boysen succeeds University of North Dakota hall of famer, Tom Wynne, who recently retired after his 30th season leading the UND tennis program.
Boysen played collegiately at the University of Central Florida where he graduated in 1992.
