Lamoureux, Sioux men's hockey team shut out Seawolves 5-0 to gain series split

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? UND goalie Philippe Lamoureux (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) made 23 saves and posted his first career shutout to lead the ninth-ranked Fighting Sioux men's hockey team to a 5-0 win over Alaska Anchorage on Saturday.

The win gave the Sioux a split in the two-game series, and UND raised its overall record to 14-9-1 and 7-7-0 in the WCHA. Alaska Anchorage fell to 6-15-1 overall and 4-11-1 in the WCHA.

In the first period, Lamoureux made saves on three Seawolves' shots from in close while the game was still scoreless.

The Sioux opened the scoring on a goal by T.J. Oshie (Fr., Warroad, Minn.) at 16:12 of the first period. The goal, Oshie's 12th of the season, came on a 2-on-1 break, with Jonathan Toews (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) sending a pass from right to left that Oshie batted past UAA goalie Nathan Lawson.

The Sioux made it 2-0 at 7:08 of the second period when Rastislav Spirko (So., Vrutky, Slovakia) picked up a rebound of a Drew Stafford (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) shot at the left of the net and fired a wrist shot over a sprawling Lawson. It was Spirko's seventh goal of the season.

North Dakota broke the game open with two goals 35 seconds apart late in the second period that gave the Sioux a 4-0 lead. Both came on breakaways, the first by Erik Fabian (Jr., Roseau, Minn.), his second goal of the season, and the next by Travis Zajac (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba), his seventh goal of the season.

After Zajac's goal, Lawson was relieved in goal by Alaska Anchorage senior John DeCaro.

UND outshot UAA, 9-7, in the second period.

North Dakota was called for its first penalty of the game at 3:59 of the third period, when Toews was called for tripping, and received another at 7:08 when defenseman Joe Finley (Fr., Edina, Minn.) was also penalized for tripping.

UND got its final goal at 15:29 of the third when Mike Prpich (Sr., Kenaston, Saskatchewan) batted in a rebound of a Fabian shot out of midair and past DeCaro. It was Prpich's fourth goal of the season.

The Sioux outshot the Seawolves, 15-6, in the third period and 39-23 in the game. DeCaro made 14 saves for UAA, while Lawson made 20 saves.
