Two third period goals lift Tigers to 3-2 win over Sioux

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? Colorado College scored two third period goals to overcome a 2-1 deficit after two periods to beat the UND men's hockey team 3-2 on Saturday.

It was a rare loss for the Sioux in that UND entered the game with a 36-1-3 record in its last 40 games when leading after two periods.

Colorado College got the two difference-making goals in a 1:09 span in the third period.

The first of those was a power play goal by Joey Crabb at 6:31 that tied the score, 2-2. Tigers freshman Chad Rau then scored the eventual game winner at 7:40.

“There's some small parts to the game that lead to big changes in the outcome of a game,” said UND head coach Dave Hakstol. “We got caught on those tonight.”

Crabb's goal came after an unsual deflection of the puck off the glass behind the net, while Rau's deciding goal came after a scramble for a loose puck in the corner.

UND's record fell to 18-13-1 overall and 11-11-0 in the WCHA, while Colorado College raised its mark to 18-11-1 overall and 10-9-1 in the WCHA.

The Sioux are now in a tie for fourth place in the WCHA standings with St. Cloud State, which defeated Alaska Anchorage, 6-1, on Saturday. Colorado College is in sixth place, one point behind the Huskies and Sioux.

“It's disappointing not to get the win tonight,” said Hakstol. “But we had to get one win this weekend and we did that.”

North Dakota opened the scoring 2:24 into the game, when Mike Prpich (Sr., Kenaston, Saskatchewan) knocked in his own rebound at the left side of the goal after a pass from the corner by Rylan Kaip (So., Wilcox, Saskatchewan). It was Prpich's fifth goal of the season.

Colorado College tied it with 58 seconds remaining in the first period when Trevor Frischmon scored on a breakaway.

The Tigers then went on a five-minute power play as a result of a checking from behind major penalty and game misconduct called on Sioux defenseman Zach Jones (Fr., Lisle, Ill.) with 34 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Sioux killed off the five-minute penalty, allowing just one shot on the power play.

With the scored tied 1-1 midway through the second, CC's Brett Sterling was called for holding the stick midway, and it took the Sioux just 19 seconds to capitalize and make it 2-1.

T.J. Oshie (Fr., Warroad, Minn.) fired a pass from the right boards to Travis Zajac (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba), who scored his 10th goal of the season on a wrist shot from the slot.

CC outshot UND, 39-23, in the game, with UND goalie Jordan Parise (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) making 37 saves.

UND is off next weekend and will return to action with a two-game home series against Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 17-18.
