DULUTH, Minn. -- The Fighting Sioux volleyball team travelled to Duluth today to take on the #5 team in Division II and came away with a 0-3 loss. UND was no match for Minnesota-Duluth's combination of Vicky Braegelmann and Rachel Langseth. The duo finished with 18 and 12 kills, respectively.
UND kept the first game close but still came up short 30-22. In the second game, the Fighting Sioux passing game started to fall apart and they lost game two 30-16. In the last game, poor passing again was the culprit to UND's demise as they lost the third and final game 30-20. Head Coach
Katy Peterson commented, "We played a good first game, but the passing game fell apart in games two and three and that led to our inability to stick with them. They are a really good team and they have two very tough hitters up front in Braegelmann and Langseth."
Defensively the Sioux were led by
Lindsay Vortherms (So., Windom, Minn.) who finished the match with 17 digs. Freshman
Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) contributed 11 digs to the defensive effort.
Britta Hanson (Fr., Thompson, N.D.) finished the match with 4 block assists.
The Sioux offense was led by senior
Aileen Cahill (Blue Earth, Minn.) and junior
Tara Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) who each finished with eight kills. Junior
Kendyll Jones (Plymouth, Minn.) and senior
Heidi Evans (Roseau, Minn.) each tallied six kills as well. Setting the way for the hitters was
Allison Louwagie (So., Marshall, Minn.) who finished with 18 set assists.
The Sioux drop to (6-6), (1-1) on the year and will have a couple of days off before they play Bemidji State on Tuesday in a non-conference battle.
