GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux volleyball team defeated Bemidji State in convincing fashion in 3 games. In game one, the Sioux hung on to win 30-28. In games two and three, UND asserted their dominance by winning 30-15 and 30-17, respectively. The Sioux improve to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the NCC. Bemidji State falls to 6-14 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC.
The Fighting Sioux were led by the hitting duo of junior Tara Holmen (Berthold, N.D.) and senior Heidi Evans (Roseau, Minn.). Holmen led all hitters with 18 kills, and Evans was not far behind with 17 of her own. Senior Aileen Cahill (Blue Earth, Minn.) contributed eight kills to the offensive effort.
Defensively, the Sioux were led by seniors Evans and Cahill. Evans led all defensive players with 15 digs and Cahill had 10. Evans now has seven double-doubles on the year. Also contributing was sophomore Lindsay Vortherms (Windom, Minn.) with nine digs. Senior Nicole Delahanty (Apple Valley, Minn.) and freshman Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) each had seven digs for the Sioux.
Setting the way for the Sioux offense was sophomore Allison Louwagie (Marshall, Minn.). A night after she set a career high, Louwagie followed up that performance with another outstanding game, as she finished with 51 set assists.
The Sioux will return to action on Saturday against South Dakota. The game will be played in Vermillion, S.D. and game time is set for 7 p.m.
