LEKSAND, Sweden--University of North Dakota sophomore forward Jonathan Toews scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as Canada defeated Russia 4-2 today to win its third straight gold medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
Toews' power-play tally was one of three Canadian goals within five-minute span starting at 15:35 of the first period. The Winnipeg, Man., native also set up Canada's fourth goal and was named player of the game.
Toews, who led Canada in tournament scoring with four goals and three assists in six games, was named to the all-tournament team.
A member of the gold-medal winning Canadian team last year in Vancouver, Toews becomes the first UND player to win two gold medals at the world junior championship. Former defenseman James Patrick, who won gold with Canada in 1982 and bronze in 1983, is the only other Fighting Sioux to win two medals at the tournament.
Toews' UND teammates, defensemen Taylor Chorney (So., Hastings, Minn.) and Brian Lee (Moorhead, Minn.), helped lead Team USA to the bronze medal with a 2-1 win over host Sweden earlier in the day. Chorney set up Erik Johnson's game-winning goal and finished the tournament with one goal and five assists in seven games to finish tied for third on the team in scoring.
