GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Brittany Kirkham and Danny Freund have been named the University of North Dakota Scholar Athletes of the Month for October.
Kirkham, a sophomore goalie on the women's hockey team, led UND to a shutout sweep of Bemidji State on Oct. 19-20. It was the first WCHA sweep in the history of the program. Kirkham set a team record with 201.23 consecutive shutout minutes and had three consecutive shutouts. Kirkham was also named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 23.
Kirkham is majoring in English and has a 3.89 grade-point average.
Freund, a junior quarterback for the football team, led UND to a 7-1 record, rushing for two touchdowns and passing for another the team's recent win over Minnesota Duluth last Saturday. Freund, the North Central Conference's top rated passer (as of Oct. 31), also had a season-high 366 passing yards (27 completions on 45 attempts) on Oct. 13 against Nebraska-Omaha, and had a season-long, 81-yard touchdown pass in the Oct. 6 win over Minnesota State.
Freund is majoring in banking and financial economics, and has a 3.76 grade-point average.
