GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? Five University of North Dakota women's hockey players and three UND men's players were named 2007 WCHA Scholar-Athletes today by the league office. UND's total of eight scholar-athletes is more than any other WCHA school.
It is the second year in a row that the WCHA has announced a team of scholar-athlete award recipients.
To be named to the team, student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his or her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.
UND women's players honored include: Aynsley Allen (Sr., F, St. Andrews, Manitoba), Christey Allen (Jr., D, St. Andrews, Manitoba), Christy Carlson (So., D, Hutchinson, Minn.), Casie Hanson (So., D, St. Peter, Minn.) and Alyssa Johnson (So., F/D, Fergus Falls, Minn.).
UND men's players honored include: Erik Fabian (Sr., F, Roseau, Minn.), Brian Lee (So., D, Moorhead, Minn.) and Ryan Martens (So., F, Selkirk, Manitoba).
Fabian is one of 23 repeat selections.
The WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award was developed through Association member team Faculty Representatives and approved by the conference membership beginning with the 2005-06 season.
WCHA Scholar-Athletes will be recognized and honored on-ice with a commemorative plaque at member team home games during the remainder of the 2006-07 season. The winners will also be recognized in tournament programs and in future men's and women's conference yearbooks.
