GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? Senior basketball player Daniel Harkins and junior volleyball player Amanda Polzin have been named the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux Club Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 10 to Nov. 16.

Harkins, a guard from Portage, Wis., scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Sioux to a season-opening 61-56 win at Missouri-Kansas City last Friday night, UND's first game as a Division I program.

The 14 points by Harkins, 12 of which came in the first half, represented his highest scoring output since Nov. 19, 2005, when he scored a career-high 20 points as a freshman against Southwest Minnesota State. Harkins missed the entire 2006-07 season due to injury and averaged fewer than seven minutes in 23 games as a reserve last season while battling back from that injury.

Harkins finished Friday's game 5-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-4 from 3-point range, with five rebounds and one assist in a team-high 33 minutes.

Polzin, a middle hitter from Hutchinson, Minn., was named to the Bryant National Transitions All-Tournament team last weekend after helping the Sioux close out the 2008 season with a victory over host Bryant on Saturday. Polzin finished the game with 22 kills and a .426 attack percentage.

In three games at the tournament, Polzin registered a team-leading 39 kills (2.79 kills per set) and hit .255. She also added six block assists.

Polzin and the Sioux finished their first Division I season with a 24-8 record, tied for the second-most wins in UND single-season history.

The Fighting Sioux Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the UND media relations staff.
