Lamoureux shuts out UMD as men?s hockey wins 2-0

DULUTH, Minn. ? Goalie Jean-Philippe Lamoureux (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) stopped all 28 shots he faced to lead the UND men's hockey team to a 2-0 win over Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Fighting Sioux, who stretched their unbeaten streak to 14 games (13-0-1), two shy of the school record of 16 games (13-0-3), which was set in 2002-03.

North Dakota is now 22-8-2 overall and 17-7-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Minnesota Duluth fell to 12-13-6 overall and 8-12-5 in the WCHA.

The win allowed UND to move back into second place in the WCHA, two points ahead of Denver. Both UND and Denver have three regular season games remaining.

The win was the 100th coaching victory for fourth-year UND head coach Dave Hakstol, who became the fourth Sioux head coach to reach the century mark in wins. The others are Rube Bjorkman, John “Gino” Gasparini and Dean Blais.

Hakstol is the 43rd active NCAA Division I men's hockey head coach to reach 100 career victories. Of those coaches, only two others ? Notre Dame's Jeff Jackson and Colorado College's Scott Owens ? won their 100th game in their fourth season.

It was the second shutout in a row for the Sioux, who shut out Bemidji State on Sunday behind Aaron Walski (Sr., Fargo, N.D.). UND has not given up a goal in 145 minutes, 32 seconds, dating back to UND's 5-1 win over Bemidji State on Feb. 23.

For Lamoureux, the shutout was his fifth of the season and ninth of his career.

The only goal UND needed came with 44.9 seconds left in the first period when defenseman Chay Genoway (So., Morden, Manitoba) launched a slap shot from the right point that was tipped by T.J. Oshie (Jr., Warroad, Minn.) and went in off the crossbar. It was Oshie's 14th goal of the season.

It was also Oshie's fourth game-winning goal of the season and 15th game winner of his career, tying him with Brandon Bochenski for second on the all-time school list.

As in the first period, the only scoring in the second period came in the final minute, as the Sioux converted on their sixth power-play opportunity of the game after being held scoreless on their first five power play chances.

Chris VandeVelde (So., Moorhead, Minn.) was the goal scorer, and his 13th goal of the season came from in close on a slick passing play. On the play, Ryan Duncan (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) passed the puck through traffic from the right side to Oshie in the left circle, and Oshie found VandeVelde alone in front of the net.

UND outshot the Bulldogs 20-9 in the second period and 35-28 in the game.

The Bulldogs were shut out for a school-record third consecutive game.

The teams will conclude their series with a 2:07 p.m. game on Sunday.
