GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? Ten University of North Dakota men's hockey players were among 80 student-athletes honored by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association on the 2007-08 All-Academic Team, the league office announced today. UND's 10 honored student-athletes were more than any other WCHA team.
It's the second year in a row that UND has led the WCHA in all-academic honorees.
To earn a position on the All-WCHA Academic Team, member team student-athletes must meet the following criteria: 1) have completed one year of residency at present institution, prior to the current academic year; and 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his overall GPA is at least 3.00 for all terms at his present institution.
UND's members of the 2007-08 WCHA All-Academic team include, in alphabetical order: *Robbie Bina (Sr., Defenseman, Grand Forks, N.D.); *Ryan Duncan (Jr., Forward, Calgary, Alberta); *Joe Finley (Jr., Defenseman, Edina, Minn.); Michael Forney (So., Forward, Thief River Falls, Minn.); Chay Genoway (So., Defenseman, Morden, Manitoba); Andrew Kozek (Jr., Forward, Sicamous, British Columbia); *Ryan Martens (Jr., Forward, Selkirk, Manitoba); *Aaron Walski (Jr., Goaltender, Fargo, N.D.); *Matt Watkins (Jr., Forward, Aylesbury, Saskatchewan); Darcy Zajac (So., Forward, Winnipeg, Manitoba).
Forty-five of the 80 student-athletes are repeat honorees (noted by an asterisk).
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has honored an all-academic team annually since the honor was first approved by the membership for the 1984-85 season.
