DULUTH, Minn. -- Sophomore forward Chris VandeVelde scored a goal 53 seconds into overtime to lift the University of North Dakota men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth this afternoon. It was another third period comeback for the Fighting Sioux, who trailed 1-0 midway through the third period.
From behind the net, senior captain Rylan Kaip floated the puck into the crease, where VandeVelde punched it in before Duluth goaltender Alex Stalock could put his glove on it.
MacGregor Sharp gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the 11:10 mark of the third period. However, the Sioux responded. Junior Andrew Kozek created a Bulldog turnover in the UMD end, then lasered the puck past Stalock at 12:50 of the third.
UND goaltender Jean-Philippe Lamoureux had another solid game in net. Lamoureux finished with 22 saves.
The Sioux will host St. Cloud State in the regular season finale next Friday and Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
