Former UND players honored by NHL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Jason Blake and Jonathan Toews, two former University of North Dakota men's hockey student-athletes, were honored at the NHL Awards Show, held Thursday at Elgin Theatre in Toronto, Ontario.

Blake received the NHL Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Toews was named to the NHL all-rookie team.

Blake, who played for the Fighting Sioux from 1995-99, was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs and scored 52 points (15 goals, 37 assists). Before the season began he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, a treatable form of cancer.

Toews, who played for UND from 2005-07, scored 24 goals and 30 assists in 64 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, leading all NHL rookies in both goals scored and power-play goals (7) and was third in points. He scored a point in his first 10 professional games before missing the next month after a knee injury.
