Cichy named WCHA Rookie of the Week; UND No. 4 in USCHO poll

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota freshman forward Mike Cichy has been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Red Baron Rookie of the Week for his outstanding debut last weekend in UND's non-conference sweep of Merrimack.

Cichy, a native of New Hartford, Conn., collected a goal and two assists with a team-leading +4 plus/minus rating as the Sioux skated to 5-2 and 3-2 victories over the Warriors.

Cichy was named the game's second star in Friday's 5-2 win after notching a pair of assists - including one on Chris VandeVelde's second period game-winner - and leading all players with a +3. The following night, Cichy was named the game's first star after scoring a go-ahead goal in the second period for his first collegiate tally.

Michigan Tech sophomore forward Brett Olson was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week while Minnesota State junior defenseman Kurt Davis earned defensive player of the week honors.

It was also announced today the UND is ranked fourth nationally in the latest USCHO.com/CBS College Sports poll. The Sioux climbed two spots from their previous ranking after the sweep over Merrimack.

Miami, previously ranked fourth, took over the top spot from Denver, which slid to third. Defending NCAA champion Boston University remained No. 2.
