The University of North Dakota women's soccer team got a much needed win this afternoon in Houston, Texas, as the Sioux exploded with four unanswered goals in the first half on their way to a 5-1 win over Texas Southern.
The Sioux had five different goal scorers in the game as seniors Mandi Boehmer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Sarah Penner (Winnipeg, Manitoba), junior Becca Krynski (Rapid City, S.D), sophomore Rachael Loomis (Fargo, N.D.) and freshman Rhaya Ballon (Rogers, Minn.) all found the back of the net.
"We were able to put away some of our chances," head coach Kristen Gay said. "Rachael Loomis had a great weekend with two goals and we got a win which we certainly needed. The girls played with confidence and hopefully this is the spark we needed."
Krynski grabbed the lead for the Sioux, which they wouldn't relinquish, only 2:55 into the first half, unassisted, while Rachael Loomis would score her team-leading sixth goal of the year and eventual game winner at the 10:19 mark. Penner (23:19) and Ballon (36:42) would add goals in the half.
Senior Lauren Sera (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was the games wiinning goaltender making four saves on five shots. The Tigers lone goal came only 43 seconds into the second half with a goal by Nailah Johnson, but Boehmer would close out the games scoring and regain the four goal lead at 85:33.
The Sioux outshot the Tigers 17-7 and 9-5 on goal while the Sioux could have amounted even more pressure but were called offsides eight times.
The Sioux return to Great West Conference action where they will look to remain in the win column as they head to Orem, Utah, on Friday for a rematch against Utah Valley. Game time is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
