VERMILLION, S.D. --- After a scoreless first half of action the University of North Dakota soccer team was edged by the South Dakota Coyotes 2-1 in the opening Great West Conference game for both teams.
Sophomore Rachael Loomis (Fargo, N.D.) scored the Sioux (1-7-1, 0-1-0 GWC) lone goal.
"This is the best game we've played all season," head coach Kristen Gay said. "The girls fought hard and we created more shots, however we couldn't put the game away."
After outshooting the Coyotes 10-5 in the first half, the Sioux finaly broke through on the scoreboad Loomis gave the squad the lead scoring at 51:01 unassisted.
It was the third meeting between the two teams this season with both earlier contests being highly contested one-goal games, this one would prove to be no different.
The Coyotes would even the goal at one a piece at 79:23 with a goal by Erin Bello.
The Sioux would suffer another heart-breaking goal in this series of rivals, when Savanna Lokkesmoe would score the eventual game-winning goal with under five minutes remaining (86:41).
UND finished the game outshooting the Coyotes 19-11 with junior Alex Zarling (Fargo, N.D.) leading the way with eight shots (four on goal).
The Sioux remain on the road for a Sunday meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, against Drake with a scheduled 12 p.m. start.
