GRAND FORKS, N.D. --- The University of North Dakota soccer team trailed 4-1 with under 20 minutes remaining today against South Dakota at Bronson Field, but was able to cut the lead to one goal in the 85th minute in comback attempt that fell just short.
Before the game the Sioux (1-12-2, 0-5-1 GWC) celebrated its nine seniors on senior day in Lauren Sera (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Becca Krynski (Rapid City, S.D.), Kirsten Zachman (Mahtomedi, Minn.), Sarah Penner (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Haley Oase (Minot, N.D.), Mandi Boehmer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), Meagan Houlihan (Lincoln, Neb.), Ericka Lund (Andover, Minn.) and Brittany Harty (Jamestown, N.D.).
Erin Bello scored to give the Coyotes an early lead only 3:42 into the first half, but the lead was quickly erased as Rachael Loomis (Fargo, N.D.) scored only 23 seconds later. Assist went to Veronika Zischka (Calgary, Alberta).
USD (4-9-1, 2-2-0 GWC) would take a 3-1 lead into the half though as Yutzil Rodriguez scored at 12:04 and Sarah Wheeler added a goal at 15:11, both first goals of the season.
The Coyotes would seem to grab all the games momentum as Quinones scored at 54:29 to put them up by three goals, but the Sioux showed no quit under the leadership of their seniors.
Loomis would score her second of the game and team-leading eighth goal of the season at 76:43 to cut the lead to two, again with the assist going to Zischka.
The Sioux would rally for another goal at 84:11 by Boehmer, with the assist going to Loomis and her fifth point of the game, but would be unable to score the tying goal in the final minutes. The Sioux outshot USD 11-7 in the final half after being outshot 7-5 in the first.
The Sioux return to action in its last home game next Friday in a non-conference game with Cal State Bakersfield before its Great West Conference Tournament in Newark, N.J., Nov. 6-9.
