DES MOINES, Iowa --- The University of North Dakota soccer team suffered a heartbreaker on Friday against South Dakota and concludes its four-game road stretch with another tough one in a 1-0 overtime loss to Drake.
Even in the loss, the Sioux showed a ton of improvement from last year where the Sioux lost 9-0 on the same field being outshot 35-7.
"The team played so well today," head coach Kristen Gay said. "Everyone stepped up and if we continue to perform and compete like this you will see great things from us down the stretch."
Ali Walsh scored the game-winning goal with only 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Walsh was able to take advantage of a rebound given up on a save by Sioux goalkeeper Lauren Sera (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Sera made the initial save on a shot by Crystal Townley where Walsh was able to shoot the rebound into the upper right corner. Sera would conclude the game with eight saves.
The Bulldogs earned a corner kick with only 12 seconds remaining but could not capitalize sending the game into overtime.
Alex Zarling (Fargo, N.D.) had two shots-on-goal for the Sioux which led the team.
The Sioux return to action next weekend with two conference games at Bronson Field in Utah Valley on Friday (3 p.m.) and Houston Baptist on Sunday (12 p.m.).
