Sioux upended 3-1 as season concludes in GWC tournament semifinals

NEWARK, N.J. --- The University of North Dakota soccer team looked to carry over the momentum gained after defeating the top-seeded team in the opening round of the Great West Conference Tournament yesterday, but the Houston Baptist Huskies jumped out to an early lead and was able to hold on tonight for a 3-1 win to advance to the finals.

"Its a tough way to end the season but we proved something to the conference," head coach Kristen Gay said. "I am extremely grateful for having the opportunity to coach our nine seniors and wish them well in their future."

Gabby Trujillo gave the Huskies the lead they wouldn't relinquish on 4:50 into the game as she took advantage of a shot by Brandi Hart that went off the right post and Trujillo kicked in the rebound from three yards in front of the net.

Trujillo added to the lead with her second of the game at 32:58 when she was able to take a pass from the right-side goalline to the top of the box and put a shot in to the back of the net from 18 yards out.

Isla Cameron would push the lead to 3-0 when she put a shot from 35 yards out into the bottom left corner of the net.

Trying to rally late showing no quit the Sioux would get on the scoreboard when freshman Rhaya Ballon (Rogers, Minn.) took a long ball, advanced it on net and passed it across the front of the net to senior Brittany Harty (Jamestown, N.D.) who scored her first collegiate goal.

"I am happy for (Brittany Harty) who started her career as a walk-on and worked for four years earning a scholarship and ending her career with a goal," Gay said.

The score would hold though as the season and careers came to an end for Harty, Ericka Lund (Andover, Minn.), Meagan Houlihan (Lincoln, Neb.), Mandi Boehmer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), Haley Oase (Minot, N.D.), Sarah Penner (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Kirsten Zachman (Mahtomedi, Minn.), Lauren Sera (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Becca Krynski (Rapid City, S.D.).
