LINCOLN, Neb. - In the final game of the Adidas Husker Tournament, the University of North Dakota was outscored 2-0 by Creighton. The Fighting Sioux (1-4) held the Jays (7-1-1) scoreless through the first half, but a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes of the final half gave Creighton the win.
CU's Andrea Zuniga scored the first goal of the game and her second of the season at the 52:24 mark. Zuniga's goal shot at the top of the penalty box was set up by Emily Orbell and Laura Nasseri.
Less than 15 minutes later, Orbell nabbed her own goal with a shot from the left side of the penalty box that slid into the upper left corner of the goal. The goal, her fourth of the season, was assisted by Kyla Hoskins.
North Dakota was held to just six shots, two in the first 45 minutes, while the Jays were able to get off 21 shots (eight on goal). UND's senior netminder Lauren Sera (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was credited with a season-high six saves. CU's Kaitie Jo Swanson had four.
Sophomore Rachael Loomis (F, Fargo, N.D.) led the Sioux with two shots (one on goal), while senior Kirsten Zachman (F, Mahtomedi, Minn.), sophomore Kelsey Zachman (MF, Mahtomedi, Minn.), freshman Rhaya Ballon (D, Rogers, Minn.), and freshman Sheri Stapf (D, Lakeville, Minn.) had one shot apiece.
"I'm proud of the way we competed today," head coach Kristen Gay said. "We played teams this weekend that are where we need to be. Today we made great strides in closing that gap."
Orbell led the Jays with five shots (three on goal), one goal, and one assist.
North Dakota will return to soccer action on Tuesday, Sept. 5 when it hosts Northern State at Bronson Field at 4 p.m.
