GRAND FORKS, N.D.--University of South Dakota junior midfielder Katie Quinones scored her third goal of the game with 22.2 seconds left in the second overtime period to give the Coyotes a 3-2 non-conference win over the host Fighting Sioux this afternoon at Bronson Field.
Freshman forward Rhaya Ballon scored her first collegiate goal for the Sioux. Alex Zarling also scored for UND.
Zarling, a junior forward from Fargo, N.D., got the games scoring started with the lone goal of the first half at 28:31 when she was able to corral a rebound and put it past Coyotes netminder Jennifer Ogren.
Even allowing the goal in the first half, Ogren was able to keep the game close which would pay of in the end making five saves in the half (nine in the game).
"Their goalkeeper played great," head coach Kristen Gay said. "I think she kept them in the game. We need to make sure to take care of our opportunities on Sunday.
Quinones scored her first of what would be a hat-trick night at 59:54 to even the game at a goal apiece, and the go-ahead goal only 1:53 later.
Rogers, Minn., native, Ballon would score for the Sioux at 82:51 which would force the game into overtime (assisted by Sarah Penner and Ericka Lund).
With only 22-seconds remaining, Quinones was able to put a shot past a diving UND goalkeeper, Monica Stierman (Mahtomedi, Minn.) for the game-winning score.
Stierman would finish the game with six saves.
The Sioux will look to rebound with another crack at the Coyotes on Sunday when they travel to Vermillion, S.D., for a 1 p.m. game.
