BROOKINGS, S.D. - In the 2010 football season finale, South Dakota State finally got its revenge over North Dakota as it shutout UND 21-0 at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in front of 3,900 fans brave enough to sit through the cold temperatures and wind.
It took the Jackrabbits (5-6) just three minutes to build a 6-0 lead over the Sioux (3-8).
On the opening kickoff, Brodie Cole returned the ball 64 yards to the UND31, but with a personal foul called on UND, the ball was placed on the 16-yard line. After little gain on the ground and an incomplete pass, Peter Reifenrath stepped in with a 26-yard field goal at 13:27.
Cole finished with 124 all-purpose yards with 64 on kick return and 58 on punt return. Reifenrath was 2-for-3 on field goal attempts and split the uprights on his lone PAT.
On the ensuing kickoff, R.J. McGill (Fr., WR, Phoenix, Ariz.) ran the ball to the UND25, but on the tackle, Ross Shafrath punched the ball loose and pounced on it for the Jackrabbit takeover. Three plays later, Reifenratch struck again, this time from 34 yards out to give SDSU the 6-0 lead with 12:00 on the clock.
UND then began to work its way back in to scoring position, but Dirk Kool put an end to the drive as he intercepted Brent Goska's (Jr., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) at the SDSU25.
The Jacks made little work of their next drive, but after forcing the Sioux to a punt out of fourth and one, they took the ball 63 yards on eight plays for their first touchdown of the game.
After taking its 14-0 lead into the 2nd quarter, SDSU racked up some insurance points with a five-yard touchdown run from Tyler Duffy at 5:22. With the PAT from Shafrath, the Jacks took a 21-0 lead and held tight for the remainder of the game.
Led by quarterback Thomas O'Brien, South Dakota State finished with 356 yards of offense. O'Brien went 19-for-38 for 235 yards and went the entire game without an interception. His longest pass was a 50-yard toss to Tyrel Kool, who finished with 105 yards on six carries. Duffy finished with 127 yards on 36 attempts and scored both of SDSU's touchdowns.
With the offensive struggles in Montana continuing through to today, the Sioux were held to just 185 yards of total offense. Goska was 11-for-27 for 90 yards. Junior Josh Murray (RB, Pepin, Wis.) tallied 50 yards on 12 attempts and 36 yards on five receptions.
Defensively, junior Mitch Goertz (LB, Rothschild, Wis.) finished with a game-high 13 tackles (six unassisted). Heading into the half, Goertz had already racked up a career-high 10 stops. He also registered a pass breakup and nearly picked off O'Brien twice.
Senior Joel Schwenzfeier (DB, Hallock Minn.) landed 10 tackles (three solo) and junior Dan Hendrickson (LB, Minot, N.D.) finished with nine (four solo).
Senior Kris Ankenbauer (DB, Murphy, Texas) tallied a forced fumble and sophomore Devin Benjamin (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) notched his second and the team's seventh blocked kick of the season.
SDSU's Mike Lien finished with 12 tackles, including a sack and Derek Domino landed 10 stops.
Both Brodier and Kool picked up interceptions and Anthony Wise registered SDSU's second force fumble.
