GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota head women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck announced today that signed National Letters of Intent have been received by Charnay and Charnise Mothershed to join the Fighting Sioux for the 2010-11 basketball season.
Twin five-foot-seven guards from Tempe, Ariz., both Mothershed sisters graduated from South Mountain High School and played the last two seasons at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"Both of these ladies will bring great quickness to our program and will give us many options when it comes to both offense and defense," Roebuck said. "Charnay and Charnise are team oriented and very unselfish. They have already played two years out of high school so that will bring some much-needed experience to our young squad."
A point guard, Charnay was named NJCAA DII National Player of the Week after helping Scottsdale to two victories over Region 1 foes. On Nov. 17 she posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 steals in a 77-67 victory over Chandler-Gilbert. She also had nine rebounds and two assists in the win. Just four evenings later (Nov. 21), she tallied 14 points with six assists, four rebounds and four steals in a 81-60 victory over Cochise.
Charnay led the Arizona Community College Athletics Association (ACCAC) last season in steals (4.3/game) and ranked sixth in assists (3.7/game) and 13th in scoring (13.2 ppg).
A guard who will most likely play off of the ball, Charnise ranked sixth in the conference in three-point percentage (.750; 51-for-68) and finished 27th in scoring (10.3 ppg).
In high school, Charnise's quickness helped South Mountain to four straight Arizona state championships. As a junior, she was a member of the 4x800 state title team.
