GRAND FORKS, N.D. - One month ago, University of North Dakota women's basketball standout Mallory Youngblut was named UND's Female Student-Athlete of the Year, capping off an outstanding career with the Fighting Sioux. Now the two-time Great West All-Conference honoree and UND's 15th highest leading scorer will take on a new challenge as she travels back to her high school alma mater to begin a career as the head women's basketball coach for Assumption High School in Davenport, Iowa.
"I'm pretty excited to go back," Youngblut said. "I know the school and had a great experience there. There is great tradition and hopefully help continue it when I go back and let the girls have the same great experience I had."
Youngblut finished her five-year career ranked 15th all-time at UND with 1,307 career points. The 29th player in program history to join the 1,000 Point Club, she ranks second in career field goal percentage (81.6), fifth in career three-pointers made (220) and career three-pointers attempted (573), eighth in career three-point percentage (38.4), ninth in career steals (175), and 10th in career field goals attempted (1,032). Youngblut is also listed second in single-season free throw percentage (85.3; 2010-11), eighth in single-season three-pointers made (70; 2009-10), and 10th in single-season three-pointers attempted (181; 2009-10). In sum, she tallied 62 games in double figures, 14 games with double digit rebounds, 12 double-doubles, 13 20-plus point games, and one game with over 30 points.
Youngblut, who graduated from UND in 2009 with a degree in education, exercise science, and wellness, will continue to work towards her Master's degree in kinesiology as she begins the transition from player to coach.
