Fifty-three Sioux named GWC All-Academic

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota has placed 53 student-athletes on the 2011 Great West Conference Winter/Spring All-Academic Team for the sports of baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, women's golf, women's tennis and softball.

The team was announced today by the conference office.

UND's 53 honorees included 12 each from women's indoor and outdoor track and field, five each from softball, men's indoor track and field and men's and outdoor track and field, four each from women's golf and women's basketball, three from tennis, two from baseball and one from men's basketball. Two of them - Kirsten Haas (track and field) and Mallory Youngblut (basketball) - were among the eight GWC student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

In all, 251 Great West Conference student-athletes were named to the team based on a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average. Honorees also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective team's contests. Using the institutions' most recent GPA, the student-athletes are selected by each member institution's sports information director, with approval from the faculty athletic representative and the head coach. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Note: UND's 53 honorees included dual recipients in men's indoor and outdoor track and field, as well as women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
