Former Sioux Val Sannes returns as assistant coach

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota head women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck announced today that four-year letterwinner Val Sannes has been added to the staff as an assistant coach. Sannes will join associate head coach Travis Brewster and assistant coach Annie Isler.

"We are very happy to have Val join our staff," Roebuck said. "She brings with her not only experience as a player, but as a coach as well. She'll be a great asset. Having been a Fighting Sioux for four years, she already understands the goals of the program and what it means to represent UND on the court."

A native of Grand Forks, N.D., Sannes played for North Dakota from 2004-08 and was the recipient of the 2008 UND Female Unsung Hero of the Year Award. She was team captain during the 2007-08 season and helped lead UND to an Elite Eight appearance in 2007.

After graduating from UND in 2008 with a degree in elementary education and a minor in coaching, Sannes served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Minnesota, Crookston.

Initially hired as the director of operations, Sannes was elevated to the title of assistant coach to replace former assistant coach John Motherwell, who was recently hired as the associate head coach at St. Catherine's University in St. Paul, Minn.
