DOVER, Del. --- The University of North Dakota soccer team opened Great West Conference action tonight with a 2-1 win over Delaware State in double overtime at Alumni Stadium.
The Sioux improve to 4-5-2 (1-0-0 GWC), while the Hornets fall to 1-11-1 (0-1-0).
"Tonight was a hard fought battle between both teams," head coach Kristen Gay said. "I am proud of the way our team responded tonight. We've got to get some players healthy before Saturday and get ready for the next one."
Senior Rachael Loomis (Fargo, N.D.) scored UND's first goal and Megan Anderson (Rapid City, S.D.) scored the game-winner for her second collegiate goal.
After a scoreless first half, Loomis was on the receiving end of a pass from Rhaya Ballon (Rogers, Minn.) and sent it into the net to give the Sioux a 1-0 lead at 84:43.
Only 30 seconds later, Jeanetta Salgado answered for the Hornets for the late equalizer that would send the game to overtime.
Anderson would return the Sioux to the win column with an unassisted goal at 103:58.
UND outshot DSU 16-7, but both UND netminder Kristi Hestdalen (Pierre, S.D.) and DSU backstop Katelyn Koslosky finished the game with five saves each.
Loomis led the Sioux with five shots while Noel Scherer (Fargo, N.D.), Anderson and Ballon each contributed multiple shots in the game.
The Sioux return to conference play on Saturday with a 6 p.m. meeting with South Carolina State at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
