North Dakota takes down Green Bay in three sets

GRAND FORKS, N.D.  - The Fighting Sioux (3-2) dug into the broom closest for a second time this weekend, picking up a quick sweep over Green Bay (2-4).

"We worked very well as a team today," head coach Ashley Hardee said. "I liked what I saw out of our setters and we had another great night of blocking. Big blocks are our style and we're going to continue to be an aggressive team at the net."

The Fighting Sioux opened with a 25-13 victory in the initial set, and then followed with a heart pounding 25-23 win to take a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Lisa Parlich (MB, Delavan, Wis.) led the way in the first set with four kills on eight swings. She finished the night with eight kills.

Senior Devin Trefz (OH, Bagley, Minn,) added to the attack with a trio of aces.

In set two, Trefz was the driving force at the net, landing four kills on eight swings. Senior Annika Smed (OH, Albert Lea, Minn.) added three more kills, and senior middle blocker Tia Russell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and sophomore middle blocker Ronni Munkeby (Lisbon, Minn.) finished with two kills apiece.

"It's great to have Annika back full strength," Hardee said. "She wasn't 100 percent last weekend, but she's been fantastic so far this weekend. She's a great all-around player and her at 100 percent is a big deal."

The Phoenix kept things interesting in the third set, but the Sioux, riding on the momentum of the first two wins, triumphed over the Phoenix (25-20) to collect the sweep.

Trefz, Munkeby, and Parlich each finished with three kills and Russell ruffled the Phoenix's feathers with three blocks (one solo).

The Sioux now lead the series over Green Bay 3-0.

Overall, Trefz led UND with nine kills and three aces for 12 points, and both Smed and Munkeby tallied seven kills apiece. Redshirt freshman setter Nikki Husfeldt (Andover, Minn.) recorded 26 assists and Turner banked 13 digs.

The Sioux out-blocked Green Bay 10-3 and finished with a .315-.079 advantage on the attack.

Green Bay will take on Montana this evening at 5 p.m. and North Dakota will close out the tournament against Southern Utah in tonight's 7 p.m. match.
