Sioux earn first-round bye in GWC Tournament

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The bracket has been set for the 2012 Great West Conference Women's Basketball Tournament scheduled for next week at Chicago, Ill.

GWC champion North Dakota is the top seed after winning the regular season with a 9-1 record. Utah Valley, the only team to defeat the Sioux this season, is the second seed after finishing with a 6-4 record. The Wolverines tied NJIT (6-4) for second place but UVU gained the No. 2 seed due to its win at North Dakota as the two teams opened the GWC season.

NJIT will be the third seed and will face-off against sixth-seed Houston Baptist (0-10). That game will be the first of the women's tournament which will tip-off at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 8. The winner of that contest will advance to play the Wolverines, who received a first-round bye, in the first semifinal game at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 9.

The top-seeded Sioux will play the winner between the No. 4 seed Texas-Pan American (5-5) and host Chicago State (4-6), the fifth seed, in the 7:30 p.m. semifinal game on Friday. UTPA and CSU will play their first-round game at 7:30 pm on Thursday.

The GWC Women's Tournament championship game will be played Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m.
