UND football honors Koppenhaver as 'Legend'

Prior Lake, Minn. -- Richard "Dick" Koppenhaver knows the meaning of "UND legend."

At the age of six when he moved to Grand Forks, N.D., his family lived between Red Jarrett and C.A. West, two of the greatest coaches in University of North Dakota football history.

Koppenhaver was honored on Monday as the 2014 UND Football Legend Award Winner by the team's letterwinners at an annual banquet and golf event at the Legends Golf Club in Prior Lake, Minn.

Koppenhaver's accolades are many, including:

  • Football letterwinner from 1950-52 as quarterback and was a captain on the 1952 team
  • Baseball letterwinner from 1950-51
  • Served various roles within the athletics department and university
  • Served as North Central Conference Commissioner in the 1970s
  • North Dakota Sports Writer and Sportscasters Coach of the Year in 1963
  • Was volunteer coach on the 2001 national championship team

Koppenhaver is also a member of the UND athletics Hall of Fame (Class of 1979), the Valley City State University Hall of Fame and the North Dakota Officials Association Hall of Fame.
