EUGENE, Oregon-- Led by senior Jillian Alleyne's 21st-straight double-double, host Oregon moved to 5-0 overall with a 77-51 win over North Dakota Saturday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena.
She registered 17 points and 11 rebounds but started slow with a good defensive effort from the Fighting Hawks (1-5). Offensively, however, UND did not make its first field goal until the final minute of the opening quarter, allowing the Ducks to pile up a 15-2 lead at that point as they never looked back.
"I thought today we played with a little more resolve and paid attention to the nuances of the game and competed very well in that aspect," UND head women's basketball coach Travis Brewster said. "The key is going to be to improve upon this game to carry it over from here on out the rest of the way. We're off to a bit of an inauspicious start, but we improved today and that's the key and that's all I ask out of these young people-- to keep competing."
After Oregon assumed that early lead, UND finally registered its field goal, a layup from Samantha Roscoe on a nifty feed from Kelsey Knox. The duo would team up on the next possession as well and UND closed it to nine before a quarter-buzzer-beating three from Jill Petersen gave Oregon a 20-8 edge through 10 minutes.
A Leah Szabla three in the second quarter put the deficit back within seven, but that was the closest the Fighting Hawks would get as Oregon defended its home court successfully for the fourth straight time this season.
Oregon went into the halftime locker room with just an 11-10 edge on the boards and a 40-26 advantage on the scoreboard.
Junior Stephanie Smith, making her first start at UND, played in foul trouble most of the contest and would eventually foul out. The North Dakota reserves finished off the contest with Jill Morton collecting a pair of steals and two points in her 12 minutes of work while Kanani Asuncion and Katie Klapprodt each added buckets in the closing minutes.
Senior Mia Loyd led the way with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists Saturday, all team highs. Roscoe added eight points, four rebounds and three blocks while junior Makailah Dyer had eight points for North Dakota.
UND, who has played five of its first six games away from home, will return to Grand Forks for its next four games beginning next Saturday's 2:00 p.m. tip against Northern Iowa.
Notes: Alleyne's double-double tied her own PAC-12 record of 21 straight ... All 13 players in uniform played for North Dakota ... Smith and Szabla each made their first starts of the season ... Asuncion's basket was the first of her career.
