SACRAMENTO – Sacramento State took control of a tight contest in the second half to register a 74-66 victory over North Dakota in the Hornets' final home game of the season Saturday in Big Sky men's basketball action.
Sacramento State (18-8, 12-3 BSC) made a clean sweep of league opponents at The Nest, winning all nine games as junior Nick Hornsby led a quartet of Hornets in double figures with 17 points. The Hornets are now tied for first in the league standings with Montana, while UND (8-18, 4-11 BSC) remains two games behind eighth-place Weber State with three contests remaining in Big Sky play.
UND dropped its fifth straight league game as sophomore Quinton Hooker finished with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. Senior Jaron Nash added 17 points for the visitors, who led by as many as eight in the first half, but saw that lead evaporate as the Hornets closed the opening 20 minutes with an 8-0 run.
That spurt allowed SAC to take a 32-29 lead at the half, but UND regained the lead briefly after coming out of the locker room with five straight points.
"Tonight, it was about costly turnovers," UND head coach Brian Jones said. "We definitely had our moments and played well at times, but these guys are a veteran bunch and they will hurt you if you do not take care of the ball and that is what got us tonight."
Senior Mikh McKinney finished with 16 points in his final home game and his back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half allowed his team to take control of the contest. Those treys capped a 10-2 run that UND would never recover from.
SAC forced the visitors into 12 turnovers, turning those into 19 points, while UND got only six points off seven Hornets' miscues.
Fellow seniors Zach Mills and Dylan Garrity rounded out SAC's double-figure scorers with 13 and 12 points, respectively. McKinney finished 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, while Garrity sank all three he attempted as the Hornets went 8-for-11 from that range. UND managed to make just 6-of-22 attempts from deep, but went 17-for-29 from inside the arc.
Hornsby finished with a double-double adding 11 boards to go with his team-high point total. His efforts allowed the Hornets to hold a 33-30 edge – a figure that included 13 offensive boards.
UND had only nine offensive boards, but did hold a 15-11 advantage in second-chance points.
UND will return home for a pair of Big Sky games next week starting with Northern Arizona on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT.
