FARGO, N.D. -- With just minutes ticking away from the final horn in a game that seemed destined to end in a stalemate, North Dakota State scored a goal to top the University of North Dakota soccer team, 1-0, in double overtime on Friday night.
“We created chances tonight in regulation and in overtime, but just weren't able to put them away, and at the end of the day that's what came back to bite us in the end.” Head coach Matt Kellogg said.
“A good team like NDSU is going to create chances, and they were able to finish there's at the end of the game. I think if we learned anything, it's that we have to be more clinical in our finishing around the goal.”
“We created too many chances in the last three games to walk away with a 0-2-1 record. But it's still a young team and we're looking forward to getting back to our winning ways against Northern Iowa on Sunday.”
The game started off with neither team settling into an offensive role. Both sides took only four total shots each in the first half, with UND landing two on frame to only one by NDSU.
However, in the second half North Dakota State came out and fired 10 shots, with five on target. Freshman keeper Olivia Swenson was up to the task and made all five saves in the second half to keep the Bison off the board and keep the game scoreless. UND took four shots in the second half, but none found their way on net.
In the first overtime NDSU took a total of five shots, but Swenson only had to make one save in the 10 minutes of action.
As the second overtime commenced, and neared completion, the game looked as if it was going to end with a nill-nill draw. However, North Dakota State's Roxy Roemer delivered the finishing strike as she scored in the 107th minute.
The lone goal by the Bison secured their second win in as many season, both coming by 1-0 scorelines.
North Dakota now moves to a 2-3-1 record as it heads into its final match of the weekend against Northern Iowa. UND and the Panthers square off on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. in Waterloo, Iowa.
