GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team took a total of 27 shots, but was only able to score once as UND fell to Green Bay, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Bronson Field.
The loss to the Phoenix snaps UND's two-game winning streak, as UND falls to 2-2-0 on the season, while Green Bay improves to 1-3-0.
The game was one of offensive chances for both sides, as a total of 48 shots were taken in the game – 27 by UND and 21 by Green Bay. Unfortunately, North Dakota only found the back of the net once while creating multiple quality scoring chances.
“I think the first half we started off pretty slow,” head coach Matt Kellogg said. “It was evident that we gave up a really soft goal in the first part of that first half. We challenged our players to get a bit more physical on 21 (Heidi Hartmann), and in the second half I think we pretty much contained her. The only problem was that we missed all of our chances in the second half. I think the second half we came out, we created, we were active, we had them on their heels, and to me that's a game we walk out of here with a win, 3-1, but we didn't take care of our chances.”
North Dakota's lone goal came in the 75th minute when Kaylee Kebba played a ball from the wing into the six-yard box. Andrea Hyduke was able to chip it off the volley over her head and past Green Bay's goalkeeper, Kelly Kent. The goal cut UND's deficit in half, and gave North Dakota a huge momentum push in the game's final 15 minutes.
However, the momentum quickly subsided after Veronica Kessler was issued a yellow card in the 79th minute and Hyduke was ejected from the game after receiving a red card in the 86th minute.
Green Bay was able to hold off North Dakota's attacks in the final minutes to claim the 2-1 win.
The Phoenix got on the board in the first six minutes of the contest, while the field was sloppy due to rainfall during the first half. Green Bay then extended its lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute.
Freshman keeper Olivia Swenson made a career high 14 saves in net.
North Dakota finishes its homestand on Sunday, hosting Omaha at noon.
