GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Montana closed the game on a 10-0 run to rally for a 65-61 victory over North Dakota in Big Sky men's basketball action Saturday.
Senior Martin Breunig scored the final five points for the Grizzlies (11-6, 6-0 BSC) and finished with a game-high 27 points as Montana remained unbeaten in league play and won its seventh-straight game overall.
Junior Quinton Hooker led UND (8-9, 3-3 BSC) with 20 points and Drick Bernstine added 14 for the home team, but the Fighting Hawks did not score again after pulling ahead 61-55 with 3:37 to play.
Breunig added 12 rebounds to post a double-double and six of those came on the offensive end.
"This one came down to the backboards," UND head coach Brian Jones said. "If we rebound like we can for 40 minutes, then we win the game.
"But, give them credit, they made some timely shots -- a contested three late that we defended how we wanted to was a big shot for them."
Jack Lopez added nine points for the visitors and it was his 3-pointer that Jones was talking about late in the shot clock that pulled the Griz within three.
Brandon Gfeller then came up with a steal and layup on the ensuing possession that brought Montana within a point.
After a UND turnover, Breunig would give Montana the lead for good on the next possession with his 11th field goal of the game. He finished 12-for-16 from the field, while the rest of his teammates were just 13-for-40.
Hooker missed a 3-pointer that he left just short on UND's next trip down the court and Breunig would get one more basket to make it a 64-61 advantage with 45 seconds to play.
Hooker drove baseline on UND's next possession, but did not get a call as he crashed to the floor and Breunig iced the game at the free throw line, making one-of-two to put his squad up by four.
Breunig's 12 rebounds helped the Griz hold a 35-28 advantage on the glass. Bernstine led UND with eigth boards.
Hooker went 2-for-5 from 3-point range and it was his triple with just over 12 minutes to play that gave UND its largest lead of the contest at 49-42. Breunig had put the Griz up 30-26 at the half with nearly half of his team's points.
Freshmen Geno Crandall and Conner Avants both added 10 points for UND to round out the home team's quartet of double-figure scorers. UND shot 46 percent from the field for the game, but only connected on 3-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Griz ended up at 45 percent and made only 5-of-20 attempts from deep.
UND will go back on the road this week as they start a two-game Big Sky road swing at Northern Arizona on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. CT.
