GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team fell, 2-1, to Northern Arizona on Friday at Bronson Field.
UND (1-9-2, 0-4-0 BSC) not only had to fight against its opponent, but also the weather as low temperatures and wind made Mother Nature a factor at Bronson Field.
Head coach Matt Kellogg was pleased with his team's effort despite coming up just short.
"Today I was very happy with the way we battled on both sides of the ball," said Kellogg.
The weather provided both teams with few offensive chances, but the Lumberjacks were able to break through in the 31st minute when Lindsay Doyle scored her third goal of the season.
Olivia Swenson was back between the pipes for the Fighting Hawks and was excellent throughout the match. The sophomore made a pair of diving saves in the first half to keep the Fighting Hawks within reach.
In the 57th minute, Bella Mantaro laid a ball onto the feet of Asia Laudal and the senior fired the shot past the NAU goalkeeper to tie the game.
"We created some good opportunities through our hard work on defense, and were able to put one away," said Kellogg on the goal.
The senior could not have picked a better time for her first-career goal as the Fighting Hawks were able to even the game with just over 33 minutes to play.
However just six minutes later, Adrian Nixt gave the Lumberjacks the lead with her fifth goal of the season.
The goal proved to be the deciding mark as the Lumberjacks held on for the 2-1 win.
UND will now turn its attention to Southern Utah as the T-Birds come to Bronson Field on Sunday.
Kellogg knows that Sunday's game will be a battle.
"Very proud of how this group refuses to quit and we are looking forward to battling again on Sunday."
Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
