GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's basketball team fell to Idaho, 65-59, on Saturday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
UND (12-12, 8-5 BSC) saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end as the Vandals used a 23-12 run in the third quarter to erase a six-point UND halftime lead.
After a back-and-forth first quarter which saw the Vandals take a 22-18 lead, UND opened the second quarter with 15 straight points, part of a 17-0 run to stake claim to an 11-point lead midway through the second quarter.
The Fighting Hawks held Idaho to only seven points in the second quarter to take a six-point lead into the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, however, Idaho (18-7, 10-3) turned tha tables. The Vandals would out-score UND 23-12 in that frame to bring a five-point lead into the final quarter.
The second half started with Idaho burying back-to-back threes-- part of a 9-for-17 effort from deep to tie the score at 35. The Vandals hit 4-of-6 from distance in that decisive third quarter to build a lead it would not relinquish in the final period.
UND tried to claw back out of an eight-point hole late in the game when Mia Loyd converted a layup on a steal to make it 62-59 with 53 seconds play.
However, Idaho was able to hit its foul shots down the stretch to hold on for a 65-59 win. With the win, Idaho wins the season series against UND and stakes a solid footing of third place in the Big Sky standings with three weeks remaining. Meanwhile, UND falls to 8-5 in league play.
Samantha Roscoe led UND with 12 points while adding four rebounds. Freshman Jill Morton and Lexi Klabo provided sparks off the bench for the Fighting Hawks with Morton adding ten points, four rebounds, four assists, and a trio of steals; while Klabo had 11 points, four rebounds, and a block.
UND returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 when the Fighting Hawks travel to Greeley, Colo. to face Northern Colorado.
