GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Junior Quinton Hooker backed up a record-setting performance on Thursday with 34 more points on Saturday leading North Dakota to a 97-71 Senior Day rout of Sacramento State Saturday in men's Big Sky basketball action.
Hooker went 11-for-12 from the field and broke an 11-11 tie with a 10-0 run by himself in the first half and the Fighting Hawks would never trail again. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native was coming off a UND Division I single-game record 38 points in Thursday's win over Portland State.
UND (15-12, 10-6 BSC) won its third straight for the first time this season and posted its best field-goal percentage as a DI member with a 63.2 percent clip (36-for-57).
Senior Dustin Hobaugh got the start in his final home game and finished with 11 points, which was his best showing in three seasons for the Fighting Hawks. Sophomore Drick Bernstine added 12 points and Corey Baldwin chipped in with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Sophomore Justin Strings had 26 for the Hornets (11-16, 4-12 BSC) and tried to keep his team close from beyond the arc as he knocked down five 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, but the hot-shooting Hawks never slowed down.
“We were dialed in from the start and had a little lapse there before Quinton took over ,” UND head coach Brian Jones said. “Once we got the momentum back, I thought we played at a high, high level and were able to send our seniors out with a nice home win.”
UND jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but the Hornets battled back to tie things up at 11-11 on a Strings' 3-pointer just over six minutes into the contest. After the visitors drew even, Hooker went to the line and made two free throws, then made three straight baskets during a 43-second stretch that ignited the crowd.
Freshman Adam McDermott would cap that spurt at 13-0 with a corner 3-pointer and the Fighting Hawks never looked back after pulling ahead 24-11. UND finished 12-for-22 from beyond the arc for the game and Hooker made a career-high five 3-pointers without a miss.
He finished the first half with 20 points and a 6-for-7 effort from the floor, helping UND shoot 58 percent as a team. Hobaugh re-entered the game and provided a late spark, converting two 3-point plays that pushed the Fighting Hawks' lead to 50-31 at the break.
UND would go 18-for-26 from the floor in the second half as 10 different Fighting Hawks found the scoring column in the team's largest win over the Hornets in a series that is now tied at 5-5.
Bernstine had a team-high six assists as UND finished with 26 helpers on 36 field goals, which set a single-game DI record. The Fighting Hawks had 24 earlier this season in a 101-59 win at Northern Arizona.
UND will go on the road for its final two Big Sky games of the regular-season starting Thursday at Montana. Tip-off against the Griz is set for 9:05 p.m. CT.
