About Quinnipiac
The Bobcats advanced to Saturday's championship game with a 3-2 win over Boston College on Thursday night.
Senior Michael Gartieg made 34 saves, 27 of which came over the final 40 minutes. Kevin McKernan, Andrew Taverner, and Landon Smith (PPG) provided the offense for Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats rank among the top five nationally in scoring offense, scoring defense, scoring margin, power play and penalty kill (see top of graph above).
QU Coaching Staff Rand Pecknold (Connecticute College '90) received the Spencer Penrose Award as the national coach of the year after guiding the Bobcats to a 32-3-7 record and both the ECAC regular-season and playoff championships.
Now in his 22nd season as Quinnipiac's head coach, Pecknold boasts a career record of 446-263-83 (.616).
Pecknold's staff includes associate head coaches Bill Riga (UMass Lowell '96) and Reid Cashman (Quinnipiac '07), as well as goaltending coach Jared Waimon (Central Connecticut State '10).
UND-QU Series History
Saturday marks just the fourth meeting between the two programs, although they met as recently as the 2015 NCAA West Region semifinal in Fargo, N.D., where host UND defeated the Bobcats 4-1.
All four of UND's goal scorers in that game are still with the team: Drake Caggiula (Sr., Whitby, Ontario), Bryn Chyzyk (Sr., Virden, Manitoba), Luke Johnson (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) and Tucker Poolman (So., East Grand Forks, Minn.).
The only other meetings came during a two-game series in Grand Forks in Oct. 2006, when UND opened the regular season with 6-1 and 4-2 victories.
